Well, in this piece we will discuss different considerations to take before going for a PRP treatment for Hair in India.

Let’s find out.

What is PRP Treatment?

PRP stands for Platelet Rich Plasma, and it involves drawing your blood and extracting the Platelet Rich component of it, inject into the areas of the scalp which is experiencing hair loss.

Platelet Rich Plasma is enriched with various types of necessary proteins and growth factors, it is your body’s own form of regenerative medicine, and this is what heals your skin when it gets damaged.

So, the idea is – when PRP treatment, your own stem cells and growth factors are harnessed, and injected in your scalp it can stimulate the hair follicles to new growth.

PRP has been there around a long time, since the 1980s but it has become quite trendy recently. In 2006 scientists discovered that injecting PRP into problem areas which have chronic issues such as Epicondylitis, reduces the healing time. Since then a whole host of medical professionals trying it out in different conditions. One of the areas where PRP is found quite effective is in the treatment for hair loss.

How does PRP work?

Platelet Rich Plasma contains several growth factors and proteins that are important in promoting tissue healing. It is thought that PRP therapy could help regrow the hair by reversing the process that occurs in Androgenetic Alopecia.

PRP is concentrated blood plasma which contains approximately 5x the number of platelets found in normal circulating blood.

In particular, the PRP specific cells that cause hair growth include:

Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF): Cell growth, collagen and blood vessel formation

Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF): For blood vessel formation

Platelet-Derived Growth Factor (PDGF): for blood vessel, cell and skin formation

Transforming Growth-Factor-Beta (TGF-b): For a growth matrix between cells, bone metabolism

Fibroblast Growth Factor-2 (FGF-2): Blood vessel and specialized cell growth

Insulin Like Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1): Also known as Somatomedin C, a protein regulator of normal physiology in nearly every type of cell in the body and has anabolic effects in adults

The PRP Therapy Process

PRP treatment is a 3-step process. Most patients require 3 treatments that are spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, with 6 monthly maintenance injections.

the 3 steps process of PRP treatment for hair

Step 1:

Your blood is taken from your arm and put into a centrifuge, a machine that spins the blood rapidly to separate it into different blood components. The amount of blood to be drawn from your body depends on the area where the PRP will be injected.

Step 2:

After spinning for 10 minutes in the centrifuge, your blood separates into 3 components

  1. Platelet Poor Plasma
  2. Platelet Rich Plasma
  3. Red Blood Cells

Step 3:

The Platelet Rich Plasma is taken into a syringe and then injected into the problem area, for example, areas of scalps that need increased hair growth.

For hair loss treatment the injections are given over about 3 minutes and generally, there are about 13 of them.

Please be warned that this procedure can be painful, more about it here [Jump Is PRP Painful Section].

There are several reputable places in all major cities in India, use the links below to find reputable clinics and hospitals for PRP treatment for hair loss –

Is PRP effective?

In 2019, a group of researchers carried out a systematic review of the research and their findings are published in the Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Journal. They looked at 11 research papers with a total of 262 participants who had Androgenetic Alopecia, and the find of the research showed that the PRP therapy reduced hair loss and increased the diameter of the hair follicles and increased the density of the hair growth.

But we need larger studies with larger sample sizes, with standard protocols to confirm if PRP is really effective. But the observations of thousands of doctors and patients can not go wrong. So, many people see results in a few months.

One must note that how the PRP preparation is made makes a huge difference in its effectiveness. It will give the best result only if the PRP is properly prepared. Take care of if the viral markers are being done before PRP is being injected.

Know the platelet count of the PRP being injected is important. Many clinics will have the facility of checking the platelet count, especially if you are going for an expensive one, should ask for checking the platelet count in their lab. We have found that PRP treatments are really effective if the platelet concentration is 1–1.5 millions/cumm of blood.

Also, you must know that this treatment for hair loss can only make thinning hair thicker by strengthening the hair follicles. I can not grow hair in a complete bald spot.

Is PRP painful?

The PRP process can be quite painful because your scalp is very sensitive to injections because it has got a lot of blood vessels and nerves. But post-injury there is not much. You might experience a mild headache.

How long does PRP last?

There are no proper tests that can say how long the effect of PRP treatment last. Generally, the PRPs effect is life long, but as with ageing the follicles become weaker and weaker, it fades away the PRP’s effect too. You can consider undergoing another PRP treatment, it may be able to increase your hairs lifespan by a few years.

Take Away:

Before you decide to go for the treatment, you should have realistic expectations.

As PRP injections are intended to promote healing or growth, you may not experience any immediate difference. But in several weeks or months, you may notice hair growth, which you may not have noticed if you hadn’t taken this treatment.

Also, it can only thicken your hair shafts by strengthening the follicles and reactivate the follicles which very recently stopped growing hair, but it can’t grow new hair on completely bald areas. Hence, this treatment gives great results for the people who are experiencing hair loss, not so much for the people who have lost all hair.

It is best when you are young and still has like at least 60-70% of the hair. It can also be used as maintenance before and after hair transplant or a part of hair fall reduction treatment.

But as you can see it is quite expensive, you should ideally start with some topical treatments like minoxidil, or tablets like finasteride, or even try natural remedies palmetto if you are in your early stage.
